Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt (born Taldykourghan, Kazakhstan) is an art industry executive working in the field for more than a decade. She is the co-founder of blockchain.art, sales integration for galleries, artists and institutions for the sale of digital art right through their own channels.
Christina resides in San Francisco working on her start-up, with co-founder Micha Benoliel and Team, currently isolating in the area of Lake Tahoe.
She was most recently the executive director of viennacontemporary—an annual art fair in Austria that specializes in contemporary art from central and eastern Europe—through the 2018 edition. In 2018, Apollo magazine named her 40 Under 40 in Europe.
Steinbrecher-Pfandt is an expert on the blockchain application in the art markets and contemporary art of the Central and Eastern European region. As executive director in the art fair circuit for ten years, she spearheaded viennacontemporary for seven years, she sought out to bridge the gap between city and the art world as well as increase the knowledge of Eastern European artists in the world.
Working in the commercial art world as well as simultaneously curating exhibitions Steinbrecher-Pfandt acquired extensive knowledge in her field. She started her career at Galerie Volker Diehl in Berlin and Moscow, where she was the director in charge.
Steinbrecher-Pfandt has also worked as a curator, for example helping Jeremy Deller to realize the exhibition “Sound in Z” at the Palais de Tokyo, 2008. She Co-curated the exhibition “Unconditional Love” held in Venice during the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. That same year she was a member of the curatorial team for the 3rd Moscow Biennale 2009. In 2012, she was the curator of the V_Museum at the Berliner Festspiele. The following year, she curated an exhibition of the artist Katya Bochavar’s work, titled “Rhythm Assignment” at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. She was the guest curator of a city-wide arts festival, Artbatfest in Almaty, Kazakhstan 2014.
Following her interest in technology, she continuously included technology as subject of professional discourse in the art fairs as well as outside of it, hosting a talk “How Fast Start-Ups are Transforming the Art Industry?” in San Francisco in 2017. Which resulted in her current start-up blockchain.art.
Steinbrecher-Pfandt is a member of the board of the following art organizations: Cadaf Art Fair, Armenia Art Foundation, Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art and Artbat Fest.
Steinbrecher-Pfandt is an advisor to Ars Electronica since April 2019.
Steinbrecher-Pfandt holds a BA in International Business from the Maastricht School of Management. She also studied at the Universidad de Zaragoza in Spain and the Sorbonne in Paris. She earned an MA in Contemporary Art from the Sotheby’s Institute of Art (University of Manchester) in 2006.
